If you have decided to quit smoking, there are several treatments accessible. You can go for the laser sessions, shots, or the stop smoking pill. Whatever your decision, it is the end goal that matters. Kicking the habit will help you live a better quality of life, both health wise and money wise.

When Quitting Means Winning

Successful quitters have tried going cold turkey, but have suffered the agonies of their nicotine cravings. Indeed, successfully quitting varies with each individual. Many just simply walked away from the tantalizing pack of cigarettes. They just told themselves they had to stop, which they did. They are the lucky ones. On the other hand, there are the people dying to stop smoking, but each attempt is a failure. The availability of stop smoking treatments can help them in their struggle against nicotine dependency. Since there are various treatments available, they can choose the option that will work best for them.

The Wonder Pill?

There are several stop smoking pill formulations. These work to curb cravings and eliminate much of the symptoms associated with nicotine dependency. The receptor sites in the brain are blocked by the medication, leading it to believe that you just had your nicotine fix.

The stop smoking pill medications makes it easier on the body to deal with withdrawal symptoms. Some of these preparations are taken 4 weeks before smoking cessation. By that time, the body has been strengthened to face the onslaught of nicotine withdrawal. Herbal concoctions provide natural relief for tobacco and cigarette cravings, lowers nervous tensions and irritability, and helps detoxify the body of harmful carcinogens. These are also non-habit forming, nicotine-free, and provide fast relief for withdrawal symptoms.

The chemical preparations have different effects on the brain. Zyban is recommended for chain smokers. The drug creates a chemical reaction that carries messages to the brain that you have just had a cigarette. However, alcoholics and people who have seizures are warned not to take the drug. Zyban or Bupropion at 150 mg. is an antidepressant. This explains why the effects of nicotine withdrawal are reduced. Those taking this stop smoking pill have to take one or two tablets per day. The use of nicotine sprays or patches while dosing on Zyban makes the drug doubly effective.

The Shots

Smoking cessation shots are given on the arm and behind the ears. However, the drawback of this treatment is the disregard for the psychological side of addiction. This will only work for those who have the iron will to quit.

These shots use anticholiergic drugs – scopolamine and atropine. These can cause side effects like confusion, blurred vision, dizziness, dry mouth, and difficulty in urinating. Anticholiergic drugs, when used excessively, can cause heart attacks, stroke, coma, and hallucinations. If you are thinking of the speedy effects of these shots, you have to ask your doctor’s advice.

The Smart Choice

Selecting the right treatment or stop smoking pill for nicotine addiction is not about the speed with which the drug can alleviate or eliminate the withdrawal symptoms. The smart choice is the decision to quit smoking.

Your doctor is in the best position to advice you about the type of treatment you should take. As long as you have no allergies, are physically fit, and psychologically ready for the treatment, you can take whatever treatment that will be recommended for you and triumph over your addiction.

As we always see on cigarette packs, “Cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health.” This is a notice that is commonly disregarded by smokers. Without even reading this notice, they just tear open the cigarette pack, grab a stick, and light it as if they don’t want to see the glaring truth in front of it. Unfortunately, the warning stated on this package is very true. Cigarette smoking is one of the leading causes of death. As a matter of fact, 440,000 people in the United States die each year because of illnesses caused by this bad habit.

Fortunately, a lot of people have become aware of what smoking can do to their health and have made attempts to quit. Unfortunately, because of a substance called nicotine that is found in cigarettes, many people find it difficult to resist their cravings for the “high” that this substance can give. The good news is that there are now aids for smokers who want to quit. They can try chewing a nicotine gum or putting on a nicotine patch. These are two of the types of nicotine replacement therapy wherein the craving for the pleasurable feelings is quenched by the content of these gums and patches, taking away the need for a stick of cigarette. But, since this method is not always effective, a new option has been added: the stop smoking pill.

A New Use for an Anti-depressant

Zyban is a stop smoking pill that causes a sustained release of bupropion hydrochloride, the same substance found in the anti-depressant, Wellbutrin SR. This stop smoking pill boosts the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the body, giving the user the same pleasurable feeling that is induced by the nicotine found in tobacco. These pills should be taken a week before a smoker starts to quit smoking in order to combat the withdrawal symptoms that usually haunt quitters.

Although Zyban is more effective than other anti-depressants in this aspect, it has some side effects that doctors should warn their patients about before prescribing this solution. It has been proven to cause depression in users and can increase suicidal tendencies.

The New Stop Smoking Pill

Another stop smoking pill was approved by the FDA last May. Varenicline was proven to help more than one out of five smokers to stop smoking after using it for a year. This pill works by inhibiting the feelings of pleasure that smokers feel when they light up a cigarette. This stops them from associating the wonderful feeling with a stick of cigarette that they usually crave for when they are under stress, cutting off their dependency to it.

Now available under the name of Chantix, this drug should be taken twice a day for a minimum of twelve weeks in order to stop a person from lighting up a cigarette. A side effect of this stop smoking pill is said to be nausea and vomiting.

Because of the side effects that can be caused by these two stop smoking pills, they are usually considered as a last resort for people who would like to quit smoking. And for those who plan to use Zyban to quit smoking, perhaps it should be coupled with exercise in order to decrease the dependency on that medication. Exercise, after all, can hasten the release of epinephrine and norepinephrine in the body, giving a person the same high feeling that these pills can provide.

In this day and age where everything is a mere mouse click away, convenience is everything. Everybody is in a hurry, even in getting rid of his or her addiction – including cigarette smoking. The availability of several remedies has smokers in a quandary in choosing the most effective and fastest means to loosen the grip of nicotine. The stop smoking pill is one cure. But is this really so?

Warring Pills

The stop smoking pill is here. This is a prescription drug that provides relief from nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms that plague smokers during their break from cigarette smoking. The stop smoking pill medications in the market today are Zyban and Rimonabant. Pfizer has recently come up with Champix. What makes stop smoking pill products ahead of the nicotine patch are their nicotine-free formulation.

Neurobiology and Stop Smoking Pill Products

Neurobiology is the science that studies the brain and the nervous system of humans and animals. A specialization of this science focuses on the brain and the nervous system. Stop smoking pills were engineered to work on these systems to curb nicotine dependence; hence, its relation to the science.

Stop smoking pills work on the endocannabinoid system which impacts on the tobacco dependence. These work on the brain to reduce the degree of cravings and the withdrawal symptoms. These wreck the release of the pleasure chemical or dopamine. Champix from Pfizer reduces and eventually takes the gratification out of smoking. Zyban increases the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine the way nicotine does. The increased levels of these brain chemicals give people a sense of well-being and vitality. During the cessation treatment, people experience a vast reduction of the urge to smoke and the easing of nicotine withdrawal.

How Are Stop Smoking Pills Taken?

The stop smoking pill therapy is helping millions quit smoking by easing nicotine withdrawal pains and lessening the cravings for nicotine. The first to be marketed was Zyban. This drug gained a following after reports of successful smoking cessation treatments. Zyban was joined by other brands, the latest being Champix from Pfizer.

The Champix clinical runs showed that 44% of the men participating in the trials were able to quit after three months, a very impressive figure. The men in the clinical study were given the pill twice daily and they found relief from withdrawal symptoms. Their cravings also lessened during the weeks they stopped smoking. The first three days daily dosage of Champix is 0.5 mg. On the fourth and seventh day, the same dose is given but this time, twice daily. On the 8th day until the last day of treatment, the dose remains at 1 mg. twice a day.

Zyban is the oldest stop smoking pill, being developed in 1996. Patients are prescribed 150 mg once daily for the first three days. The dosage is increased to 150 mg. twice a day. Zyban is taken about 7 to 12 weeks for best results.

Side Effects

Zyban has had reported side effects, like dry mouth, headaches, insomnia, agitation, and change in appetite. Champix side effects run from nausea, headaches, abnormal dreams, dizziness, dry mouth, diarrhea, flatulence, mood swings, tremor, and heart palpitations. Stop smoking pills can also trigger skin reaction, increased blood pressure, indigestion, and constipation.

You should not self-medicate, nor take an extra dose of the pill to make up for a missed dosage. These can have serious implications on your health. Before taking these pills, you must see your doctor to avert damage that may stem from complications. Stop smoking pill medications are for real and are getting better. When taken right, these are indeed a boon for desperate smokers desiring to stop smoking.

A Pfizer drug shown to help more than one in five smokers stop smoking received federal approval on Thursday, adding another option to the limited pool of effective stop-smoking prescription medicines.

Varenicline is only the second nicotine-free smoking cessation drug to gain FDA approval. Pfizer Inc. plans to market the twice-daily tablet as Chantix stop smoking pill.

Varenicline works in two ways, by cutting the pleasure of smoking and reducing the withdrawal symptoms that lead smokers to light up cigaret again.

Most other stop-smoking pills are various nicotine-replacement therapies, sold by prescription and over the counter in gum, patch, lozenge, nasal spray or inhaler form. In 1997, the FDA approved bupropion, an antidepressant already sold as Wellbutrin but rebranded it as Zyban, an anti-smoking drug.

The approved course of Chantix pill treatment is 12 weeks, a period that can be doubled in patients who successfully stop to increase the likelihood they will remain smoke-free, the Food and Drug Administration said.

Other clinical trials show the drug’s effect is more pronounced in the short-term: 44 percent of patients quit smoking following a 12-week course of treatment with Chantix, compared to the 30 percent of Zyban patients who quit, according to Pfizer. However, smoking cessation experts said the longer-term data are more applicable, given the difficulty of quitting the habit for good.

“It’s not going to be a revolution, it’s going to be a substantial step forward,” Thomas Glynn, director of cancer science and trends at the American Cancer Society, said of varenicline. Glynn added that the greatest value will be for smokers who have tried Zyban or nicotine-replacement therapy but failed to quit.

“My bet is that it will work as well as they do and, from the look of things, a little bit better,” he said.

Varenicline latches on to the same receptors in the brain that nicotine binds to when inhaled in cigarette smoke, an action that leads to the release of dopamine in the pleasure centers of the brain. Taking the drug blocks any inhaled nicotine from reinforcing that effect.

The drug also slows the release of dopamine, which cuts the craving to smoke that occurs when nicotine’s effect wears off, said Pfizer research chemist Jotham Coe, who invented the drug.

“It’s a shield and at the same time, it stabilizes you and prevents you from having the lows, which lead to craving and withdrawal, but at the same time, it shields you from the highs,” said Coe, a former 2 1/2 pack-a-day smoker who quit smoking a first time cold turkey and then a second time with the help of nicotine gum.

One in five American adults, or nearly 45 million people, smoke. An estimated 32 million of those smokers would like to quit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Smoking kills nearly 440,000 Americans a year.

“Tobacco use, particularly cigarette smoking, is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States and is responsible for a growing list of cancers, as well as chronic diseases including those of the lung and heart,” said Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the FDA’s Deputy Commissioner for Medical and Scientific Affairs.

Quitting, as any smoker will tell you, isn’t easy. Fewer than one in 20 smokers can do so without help, Schroeder said. With help, whether it’s a drug, counseling or both, the success rate rises at most to roughly one in five, he added.

Both the FDA and European regulators recently shot down attempts by Sanofi-Aventis to gain approval for rimonabant, or Accomplia, as a stop-smoking aid. Both have recommended that the drug, which blocks the same pleasure centers in the body activated when pot smokers get the munchies, be approved for weight loss.

And at least two vaccines are being developed that could block nicotine from ever reaching the brain.

The FDA does not recommend that Chantix be used with other smoking-cessation products. Its most common side effect is nausea.
