We have all heard about the dangers of inhaling second hand smoke. Many people wonder if the dangers of inhaling cigar smoke are just as dangerous, or more. Unfortunately, it appears that being exposed to secondhand smoke from a lit cigar can be just as dangerous—or more—than regular cigarette smoke.
All secondhand smoke emitted by tobacco products are classified as environmental tobacco smoke. Environmental tobacco smoke refers to all the secondhand smoke released from tobacco products that are lit, such as cigars or cigarettes. Research indicates that the smoke from cigars and cigarettes releases many of the same types of irritants. Both cigar and cigarette environmental tobacco smoke contain nicotine, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and ammonia. The environmental tobacco smoke from cigars and cigarettes also releases well-known carcinogens such as vinyl chlorine, benzene, arsenic, hydrocarbons, and nitrosamines. Cigars, because of their size, usually release more environmental tobacco smoke than cigarettes. Being around cigar smoke, then, can pose more of a health threat than inhaling secondhand smoke from a lit cigarette.
Even though both cigars and cigarettes release similarly toxic environmental tobacco smoke, there are some key differences between the two. These differences are related to the very different ways that cigars and cigarettes are manufactured. The production of cigars consists of a long process of fermentation and aging. During the production and fermentation process, large amounts of carcinogens are produced. Once a cigar has been fermented and aged, they are wrapped in a nonporous wrapper that keeps the cigar from burning too quickly. The fermentation process and nonporous wrapper both contribute to the high concentrations of carcinogens in the smoke of al it cigar. When a cigar is lit, the carcinogenic compounds produced during the fermentation process are released. The nonporous wrapper also contributes to an unclean burn that is high in carcinogens.
Another reason why cigars produce greater amounts of carcinogens is in their girth and length. Cigars are simply bigger than cigarettes. Their size allows them to release much more smoke, and in turn, much higher concentrations of toxins and irritants. Also, cigars are designed to be smoked much more slowly than regular cigarettes, and cigar smokers are encouraged to take their time and enjoy the relaxing experience. This results in longer smoke times, and obviously, the creation of much more smoke. It is advised for all non-smokers to avoid areas where cigars are being smoked. If you smoke cigars, make sure to do so in a well-ventilated area.

Second hand smoke is a danger that we’re all aware of. A lot of people don’t know that second hand smoke is just as dangerous as actual smoking, or more dangerous. The actual proof says that smoking is as dangerous as second hand smoke is, so don’t let others smoke around you.
Environmental tobacco smoke is the name of all the second hand smoke that cigarettes and other tobacco products emit. This can mean cigarettes, cigars or other types of tobacco products, as long as they are lit and give out smoke. This second hand smoke can include substances like carbon monoxide, nicotine, ammonia and hydrogen cyanide. These are all types of irritants that are emitted by cigarette and cigar smoke. Another well known side-effect of environmental tobacco smoke is that they release carcinogen substances, such as nitrosamines, vinyl chlorine, arsenic, benzene and hydrocarbons. As you might expect, cigarettes emit less environmental tobacco smoke than cigars are, as they are smaller. Inhaling smoke from a cigar is more dangerous, as you might expect, since it emits more smoke than a normal cigarette will. While the environmental tobacco smoke that is released by cigarettes and cigars is just as toxic, some differences between the two still exist. These differences are created by the different methods of production that cigarettes have when compared with cigars.
Cigars are manufactured through an aging and fermentation process, which is long. During this long fermentation period, there are high numbers of carcinogens being produced. After a cigar goes through the aging and fermentation process, it’s put in a wrapper that is nonporous, which will make sure that the cigar doesn’t consume too fast when lit. Besides the carcinogens released during fermentation, the wrapper adds his own. When you light up a cigar, the wrapper contributes to the amount of carcinogens that will be released during the smoking process.
The length and girth of cigars is the second reason why they’re giving a bigger quantity of carcinogens. The reason is as simple as the size of cigars when compared to cigarettes. Since they’re bigger, they give out more smoke, which also has a bigger concentration of irritants and toxins. Another problem is that the way cigars are designed makes the smoking period much longer than it is with a regular cigarette, which is also recommended so people can enjoy the experience. The end result for cigars is that they take longer to finish, so more smoke is being created. Going in places where people smoke cigars shouldn’t be an option for non-smokers. Avoid taking in second hand smoke, and if you are a cigar smoker, make sure you do it in a place that is well ventilated.

Every one has heard of the risks associated with passive smoking. A lot of people ask whether the dangers of inhaling send hand cigar smoke are as great, or even greater.
Unfortunately it seems that being around the second hand smoke from a lit cigar is just carries as much danger or even more danger then that from regular cigarette smoke.
Second hand smoke given out by lit tobacco products is classes as environmental smoke from tobacco. Environmental smoke relates to all the second-hand smoke given out from lit tobacco products, including cigarettes and cigars. Research tells is that this environmental smoke contains many of the same type of chemicals and irritants that smokers inhale on a daily basis.
All types of environmental smoke from tobacco contain, ammonia, nicotine, carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, they may also contain varying amounts of benzene hydrocarbons, nitrosamines and vinyl chlorine which are all recognized as carcinogens. Due to the fact that as a rule cigars are usually considerably larger than standard cigarettes they actually release greater amounts of second hand smoke than cigarettes. Due to these facts being around second hand smoke from cigars can be a greater risk to health then inhaling second hand cigarette smoke.
Even considering that cigarettes and cigars both release similar types of environment tobacco smoke, there are in fact some key differences between both types. These key differences are due to the vastly different methods used during the manufacture of Cigarettes and Cigars.
The process of manufacturing cigars includes a long process of aging and fermentation of the tobacco leaves. During this manufacturing process, large quantities of carcinogens are made. When a cigar has been aged and fermented it is packed into a nonporous wrapper which is designed to slow the burning process of the cigar. The Fermentation and manufacturing process both add to the levels of carcinogens released into the smoke of a lit cigar.
Once a cigar is lit, to combination of carcinogens produced during the manufacturing process are released. The non-porous wrapper around the cigar also adds to an unclean burn that contains an elevated level of carcinogens.
Yet another reason for cigars producing larger amounts of carcinogens is their length and girth. To put it simply cigars are larger than cigarettes and their greater size means they emit a greater volume of smoking contain toxins, irritants and carcinogens. On top of this, and to make matters worse, cigars are designed to be smoked more slowly than cigarettes and people who smoke cigars are encouraged to “enjoy the relaxing experience” and take their time. This leads to a longer smoking time, and of course much more smoke is produced. For health reasons therefore it is advisable to avoid places where cigars are being smoked and if you personally do smoke cigars try to do so in an area which is well ventilated.
