When most people think of mouth cancer, they picture chewing tobacco as the likely culprit. However, smokers are 6 times more likely to develop mouth cancer than nonsmokers are. If you add alcohol use on top of smoking, the risk jumps up to 15 times greater likelihood. While smokeless tobacco (chewing tobacco and snuff) are 50 times more likely to develop mouth cancer, quitting smoking today can reduce the chance of developing mouth cancer, throat cancer, cancer of the voice box and cancer of the esophagus (as well as a host of other frightening diseases).

Smoking is a terrible habit; it threatens not only your own life, but also the lives of those you love and even strangers around you. Chances are you take at least a small interest in your health. Perhaps you eat more than the required number of vegetables each day. Perhaps you have a great exercise routine that helps you shed those pounds and increase your health (in theory). Maybe you routinely ensure you are getting the best vitamin intake possible. However, if you continue smoking, all that effort is for naught. Quitting smoking is the only way you can ensure you enjoy the benefits from everything else you do. Smoking is such a terrible habit that it negates all the health benefits you thought you were getting.

Mouth cancer from smoking is horrible. Not only does it disfigure your smile, ruin your teeth and gums, but it shortens your life by an incredible amount. Smokers live 15 years less than nonsmokers, even without cancer in the picture. However, mouth cancer can shorten that lifespan even more. Tongue cancer, gum cancer, cancer of the floor of the mouth and esophageal cancer are frightening and lead to many things. Imagine never being able to smile because your gums are blackened, bleeding and oozing. Imagine no longer being able to speak because of tongue cancer. Consider the ramifications of breathing through a tracheal tube, because your habit leads to esophageal cancer. It’s not a pretty picture, is it?

Quitting smoking right now can help you beat these horrors. Scientific studies show that those who quit smoking can develop the cancer resistance of a nonsmoker within years, helping you extend your lifespan and feel better throughout your life. Quitting smoking is the only way to help ensure you do not suffer the horror, the social ostracizing and disfigurement of mouth cancer.

Those of you out there who smoke or keep track of tax hikes and budget cuts may be aware of the $.62 cent federal tobacco tax hike which was enacted by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in mid 2009. This has taken the federal tobacco tax from the previous $.39 cent to a whopping $1.01.

Keep in mind, this is the only the federal tax we are talking about, we haven’t even gotten to the state tax yet. State taxes have been steadily rising since 2002 and gone up from an average of $.43 cents to $1.34 per pack. It’s estimated that 1.2 million people will quit smoking due to this tobacco tax hike.

So what’s the bright side? It can’t be all bad, can it? There will be an estimated $9 billion dollars raised annually for state expenditures from the tobacco tax hikes.

$9 billion dollars seems like a large sum of money, and it is, but it’s a ripple in an ocean compared to the estimated $193 billion dollars in healthcare expenditures and productivity lost each year. The $9 billion combined with the potential for saved healthcare costs and unhindered productivity may very well be a small, but they are important step in bringing the country out of recession.

Now, for us smokers, that may sound all great, but unfortunately that’s not going to make me quit smoking. Well, then looking for something that helps fatten up our wallets, keeps the doctors away, maintain productivity, and lets us smoke might sound a bit impossible given the situation. May sound like a dream, but it really isn’t. There is an alternative that lets you get everything you want out of a cigarette, but without all taxes, chemicals, and smoke related health risks. Does it still sound too good to be true? Well allow me to explain.

The electronic cigarette is a new piece of technology that you probably have never even heard about. With all those cheap gimmicks and false promises, it’s hard to think something as good as this could exist, but it does! The electronic cigarette is a personal vaporizer the size of a cigarette that cuts out all the middlemen. The vaporizer emits water vapor that is inhaled, feeling very much like cigarette smoke, except without the harsh, dry, scratchy feel.

The Green Smoke electronic cigarette is by far the best available on the market. A smooth indistinguishable feel of smoking without the carbon monoxide, chemical additives… and taxes? (You must be kidding.) It’s even cheaper than tobacco cigarettes. (Oh, COME ON!) Nope, you don’t just have to take my word for it, better yet, go and check it out for yourself.

Here are a couple resources available with some additional information on the Green Smoke electric cigarette that may very well be the unexpected answer you were looking for.

Smoking has been a popular pastime in the United States ever since the colonial period. With the introduction of tobacco, smoking became firmly engrained into society. It wasn’t until the nineteen fifties and nineteen sixties that health experts finally began to assert what people had long suspected: smoking is extremely dangerous to your health.

Regardless of warnings, it has taken the past several decades for people to finally get the message that they need to stop smoking. Why is it necessary to quit, and why are people in denial? The answers could save your life.

A Dangerous Habit

It is important that smokers stop smoking because it is extremely hazardous for health. There are so many consequences associated with smoking, that it is a wonder that smokers don’t stop immediately! Some consequences are long term, while others are short term. Some consequences are vanity-related, while others are health related. Whatever the consequences may be, they should be enough to make people stop smoking.

In the short term, smoking can lead to many problems. Smokers tend to have bad breath, stained teeth, and their clothes and hair smell like smoke. These reasons are vanity-related. However, other short term consequences include: lower athletic ability, cough and sore throat, the cost of smoking, faster heart beat, raised blood pressure, and increasing the risk of second hand smoke for the people around you.

Long term, the consequences are much more detrimental. They can even be fatal, and have been for many people. The toxic chemicals found in cigarettes can lead to many types of cancer, including lung cancer. Additionally, smoking cigarettes can lead to severe breathing problems, a risk for heart disease, wrinkles, increased risk for stomach ulcers and acid reflux disease, and a risk for gum disease. Many people have died because they did not stop smoking, either directly or indirectly.

Quit For Those Around You

If you won’t stop smoking for yourself, then stop for those around you. Second hand smoke is just as dangerous, if not more, than first hand smoke. Additionally, smokers set bad examples for their children. Pregnant women who smoke put their unborn child at risk. The consequences involved if you do not stop smoking do not only affect you, but the people around you as well.

Breaking The Habit

People who do not stop smoking increase their chances of an early death—and that’s a fact. Whether you stop for yourself, or for someone you love, the important thing is that you give up the habit for life.

We all know that Christmas is a time when spirits are high, and people work to have a Merry Christmas. Yet, tragedies still occur like fires, floods, and loss of property and possessions. As a homeowner, landlord or property manager, you have the responsibility of taking care that your property is protected during this season. Work out a plan to remind your tenants that they need to be careful even as they have seasonal fun and delight in their apartments. Here are some tips for landlords and managers to help prevent a Christmas disaster.

Notify Your Tenants in Advance

Give yourself thirty days to focus and take action on fire prevention at your properties. Send each tenant a written notice about fire prevention during the holiday season. Inform your tenants.

     1. Do not leave unattended candles in a room, especially if they depart their apartment

     2. Keep their trees watered daily. If they hang real wreaths, spray them with water daily

     3. Use a surge protector instead of extension cords for their decorations and portable heaters

     4. Tell your tenants if you do not want outside lighting

     5. Precaution your tenants about having Christmas parties and watching their family and friends leave after having several drinks. You want to prevent slips and falls, which could lead to homeowner insurance lawsuits

     6. Require every tenant to remove their Christmas tree by December 31st

What You Can Do As an Owner or Manager

     7. Install ABC fire extinguishers on the wall in each kitchen as a preventive measure

     8. Install a carbon monoxide monitor to avoid tenants being poisoned by carbon monoxide gas while asleep

     9. Make sure every apartment has a working smoke detector on each public hallway ceiling, outside of each bedroom ceiling, and in the basement

     10. Install extra electrical outlets to prevent tenants using extension cords for their Christmas decorations. Extra outlets will also help electrical overload from decorations and portable heating units

     11. Failing the installation of extra outlets, give tenants a surge protector for their living room tree decorations. Have them sign and date a receipt that you provided one.

     12. Look up the Red Cross online and see if or what they provide for your tenants in the event of an unfortunate catastrophe. Better to know now, then to try to find out if the worse happens, after it does

     13. If you have a vacant apartment, leave the heat on a low level to avoid pipes breaking during a cold spell. Keep a little heat flowing through the pipes. The heat bill will certainly be lower than having to stop your winter vacation to take care of the expense of a flooded apartment or basement.

Summary

Do not assume that your tenants know about fire safety during the holidays. Do not assume that they will take the appropriate precautions to protect their homes and your property. Give them the information they need to know.

A little money spent in advance could avoid the loss of your property or massive financial renovations during or after the holidays.

Every day in the U.S., 1,500 kids become regular smokers, one-third of whom will die prematurely as a result. Many young people are driven to smoking through peer pressure or because they watch their parents and role models smoke.

For parents who want to quit smoking to set an example for their children, or for anyone who wants to kick the habit, one company has a unique approach that it says helps smokers quit gradually.

Safer Smokes Inc. (www.bravosmokes.com) has created Bravo, a smoking cessation product made with lettuce leaves. It has all the characteristics of a tobacco cigarette with three key differences: no nicotine, no tobacco and none of the dangerous carcinogens derived from the additives found in commercial tobacco cigarettes.

With Bravo, smokers still get the experience of smoking a cigarette but without most of the harmful effects of tobacco cigarettes. People who use Bravo are able to eventually cleanse their bodies of nicotine.

Tobacco use is the nation’s leading preventable cause of death, killing more than 400,000 people and costing more than $180 billion in health care bills and lost productivity each year. Nearly 90 percent of all smokers start the habit by age 18.

Clinical studies have evidenced the relative safety of the Bravo product when compared to tobacco cigarettes.

Society does everything it can to get teens to avoid smoking marijuana, but nothing about cocaine and drinking alcohol. I’ve seen so many “Live above the influence” PSAs telling teens “Don’t smoke pot. You’ll die.” It’s like Reefer Madness without the black and white grain.

I have never seen a PSA for cocaine, alcohol, ketamine, PCP, caffeine, drugs that actually do damage. I know two guys: one pops caffeine pills and the other drinks four cans of Monster per day.

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with society? I would be much more concerned if my child were drinking and doing cocaine.

Then again, I’m only 16, what do I know? I’ve never done drugs, but I wouldn’t mind experimenting. At least I don’t let crap PSAs influence my opinion.

Environmental or passive smoking describes the unintentional inhalation of smoke given out by cigarettes, cigars, pipes or any tobacco based product. In some example it is described as second-hand smoke or even as sidestream smoke from cigarettes. People who occupy the same areas as those who smoke tobacco products are definitely negatively affected by passive smoking, this may include your partner, loved ones and children, and even your pets!

A great deal of scientific research has been carried out over the past few years in regard to passive smoke and it’s effects on health. The results of the research has formed an overwhelming opinion that whether you term it as passive, environmental, secondhand, or sidestream smoking the end results are as dangerous to your health (and the health of those around you) as directly lighting up and smoking a cigarette yourself. Passive smoking is now directly linked as a cause of heart and lung disease, heart attacks, asthma, copd, bronchitis and a plethora of related diseases, illnesses and conditions.

It is thought that a non smoker who works alongside those who smoke may be at an increased risk or protracting lung disease, with this risk being possibly 30% greater than those non-smokers who work in a smoke free environment. These findings are leading to more and more national and local governments, as well as employers pushing for a ban on smoking in enclosed areas in the workplace.

The British government went as far as BANNING all smoking in ALL public areas from the summer of 2007, and in the Britain it is now illegal to smoke in any public place including pubs, clubs, café’s, restaurants, all places of work and even works vehicles. Indeed many back street pubs and clubs which were once renowned for their smoky atmospheres are now completely “smoke free”.
